Questions and Answers Learn Latin at Dr Johnson’s
Q: Am I too old to start learning Latin? A: No, not at all. Maturer students often bring a better set of skills and attitudes to their studies than many younger students do. Q: Do I have to know a lot of English grammar before I start the Latin class? A: No. You will receive a gentle introduction to all the English and Latin grammar you will need in order to succeed. Q: How much homework/home study am I be expected to do? A: You can decide for yourself how much or how little you study Latin at home. However, I recommend      you spend about 15 minutes each day to begin with. Later on in the course, you may choose to spend      more time than that. If you set aside 4 or 5 short sessions each week for study, rather than a single long session you will make good progress. If you have set your heart on attaining a GCSE in Latin, you need to increase your home-study time in the second year; plan for about an hour each day, with one day off each week. Q: What if I don’t find it easy to learn and recall new vocabulary? A: That’s fine. You will be introduced to a number of techniques with which you can dramatically improve  learning and recall. Q: Are homework assignments compulsory? A: No. No. No. We want you to enjoy the classes. We don’t want you to worry about doing, or not doing, homework. We hope you will attempt some of it, or all of it if you are a keen learner. We know that adult learners have many calls on their time. We encourage you to do as much as you can, but only as much as is reasonable  given your particular home circumstances. You will not be judged or criticised for not completeing assignments. Q: I haven’t done any formal study for a very long time. Should I be worried? A: No. The course content and the teaching takes account of the needs of mature learners. Q: Do I have to sit for the Latin GCSE examinations? A: Definitely not. However, if you do decide to work towards a GCSE qualification, you will receive the teaching, help and guidance you need to make a success of it. Q: If I miss a class, will I be able to catch up with the rest of the group? A: Your tutor has more than thirty years’ teaching experience. He will be able to cope with students at different stages in their learning.  Help via email and telephone is available. Skype may also be available.
